I’m some two months into exploring traceability in IATI data, spending free hours (days…) on developing tools to do more. In April, the Strategic Partnerships funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs are expected to publish their first data, so that’s a good chance to see how well they managed to tie all their activities together.
As you can see, the resulting output has improved: version 1 was a quick proof of concept, version 2 captured activities within organisations, and version 3 allows the graphs to be edited, to add feedback or observations. And it links activities and organisations to their d-portal page for more information.
This is a part of our “IATI as a Service” offering: if you want to have a quality check on your data before you publish, we can check your data and also add the context of information about your organisation that is already published by others.
Feedback on data
To continue using the same example: here is an updated Akvo data set with a few suggestions. Click the image to open it, and click activities to open those on d-portal.
Examine upstream/downstream
Combining available data from the Dutch Ministry with that of ZOA, we can trace downstream from the activity of the Ministry…
…or upstream from an implementing partner.
Examine the graphs yourself
If you like, you can also get the raw graph data and use a freely available editor to explore your data yourself:
For the technically minded: I’m creating GraphML data (that eventually should also feed into Gephi and Neo4J), and add yEd/yFiles-specific extensions to add layout layout and editing capabilities.
